How Solana Bird Designs came to be...
It all started in 1996, several years ago at Christmas. I asked for a hummingbird feeder from my parents. My father loved the hummingbirds, he was also a Master Gardener who loved animals and nature. My parents lived 600 miles north of me in Chico, California so I wanted a special reminder of my family and the home that I came from.
The hummingbird feeder that was given to me was plastic, but it turns out to have inspired me.
With this first feeder I learned about the amazing beauty of the hummingbirds. They would always keep me guessing what they would do next. Their fascinating colors and movements kept my interest as I learned how they could easily brighten my day and bring joy with each visit.
I began to explore the idea of creating a more beautiful hummingbird feeder that would be gift worthy so that others might want to share the joy and enhance their view with these amazing little birds. It wasn’t long before I had some ideas for a new design in glass.
Making the nectar is easy…
Designing a new way to hold the nectar proved itself to be a challenge. Finding the right glassblower was key. Once I did, it took over a year of drawings and feeder prototypes. Now it seems that we've found a new artform through science, nature and European hand-blown glass.
The beautiful colors amazed me once I learned to use clear sugar water. I’m sure they will amaze those who appreciate art and nature.
With great effort, we worked for over 3 years to proudly offer the most brilliant variations of design and colors for you and your hummingbirds to share.
